Frequently asked questions
- What are invisible characters and why remove them?
- Zero-width spaces, soft hyphens, byte-order marks and direction marks are characters you can't see that often come along when you copy from Word, PDFs, chat apps or web pages. They can break search-and-replace, split words in meta tags and make two identical-looking strings differ. Non-breaking spaces are turned into normal spaces.
- Does stripping HTML keep my paragraphs?
- Yes. Paragraphs, headings, list items and line breaks become line breaks, scripts, styles and comments are removed entirely, and entities like & and ' are decoded into the characters they stand for. Links keep their text but lose the URL.
- Which emoji are removed?
- Anything shown as an emoji: faces, objects, flags, skin-tone and family sequences, and keycaps like 1️⃣. Text symbols that are not drawn as emoji by default, such as ©, ®, ™ and ♥, are kept.
