Binary, Hex and Text Converter

Convert text to binary, hex, octal or decimal bytes and back, plus a number base converter for any size integer.
13 bytes

Number base converter

Type in any field. Works with integers of any size.

Text to binary, hex and back

Computers store text as bytes. This tool shows the UTF-8 bytes of any text in binary, hexadecimal, octal or decimal, and converts byte codes back into text. Plain English letters are one byte each; accented letters take two, and most emoji take four.

When decoding, separate bytes with spaces, commas or new lines, or paste one continuous run of binary or hex and it's split into bytes automatically. 0x prefixes are accepted for hex.

Number base converter

The second section converts whole numbers between decimal, binary, hexadecimal and octal. It uses arbitrary-precision integers, so very large values such as 64-bit IDs convert exactly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert binary to text?
Choose Code → text and Binary, then paste the binary. Each group of 8 bits is one byte, and the bytes are decoded as UTF-8 text.
Why does one character produce several bytes?
UTF-8 uses one byte for basic Latin characters and two to four bytes for everything else. For example, é is C3 A9 in hex and 🙂 is F0 9F 99 82.
What happens with bytes that aren't valid text?
They're shown as the replacement character , and the tool tells you the bytes aren't valid UTF-8.
